STORY
Stainless steel, double doors and a journey through pop culture
The DeLorean DMC-12 is one of the most iconic vehicles in automotive history – not because of its technical achievements, but because of its legendary appearance as a time machine in the Back to the Future film trilogy (1985–1990).
With its futuristic lines, spectacular gullwing doors and distinctive stainless steel body, the DeLorean became a symbol of the 1980s.
The idea for this vehicle came from John Z. DeLorean, a former GM executive with great vision. The DMC-12 was built in Northern Ireland from 1981 to 1983.
In total, only around 8,500 units were built, which makes the DeLorean a sought-after collector's item today.
The technical basis came from Lotus. The PRV engine was a collaboration between Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo.
DESIGN
The striking design comes from Italdesign Giugiaro – one of the most renowned Italian design houses.
Giorgetto Giugiaro, who was also responsible for classic Alfa Romeo and Maserati, gave the DeLorean its clear wedge shape and unmistakable appearance.
Another highlight is the brushed stainless steel body – unpainted as standard – which, together with the gullwing doors, completes the science fiction look.
PERSONAL STORY
This example comes from the collection of a proven technical genius who not only appreciates visionary engineering, but also clearly has a special affinity for the aesthetics and zeitgeist of the 1980s.
